What’s in the box

One bar: a single 100 g bar in a paper-wrapped box. No plastic.

Buy 2, get 2 free: four 100 g bars, a linen scrub bag, a bamboo soap holder and a travel tin, packed in one box. The bag and the holder are for the shower. The tin is for the bar you take with you.

How to use

Wet the bar and work up a lather in your hands or in the scrub bag. Spend sixty seconds on the six spots: behind the ears, the back of the neck, the chest, the shoulders, the upper back and the underarms. Leave the lather on for a slow count of twenty, then rinse. Once a day is enough; every shower is fine. Keep the bar on the holder so it drains and lasts the month. Use it everywhere else too if you like. It is mild enough for the face.

Full ingredient list

Ten ingredients. Nothing added for scent or color.

  • Sodium cocoyl isethionate · the cleanser, made from coconut, mild at skin pH
  • Glycerin · draws water into the skin
  • Water
  • Fermented Diospyros kaki (persimmon) tannin · binds the turned oil, tested for strength on every lot
  • Solanum melongena (eggplant) fruit extract · catches the part of the smell persimmon leaves behind
  • Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice) root extract · fades dark spots
  • Camellia sinensis (matcha) leaf powder · binds the same compounds a second way
  • Tocopherol (sunflower vitamin E) · puts back what skin runs low on
  • Squalane (olive) · the oil your skin makes, in a form that cannot turn
  • Citric acid · holds the bar at pH 5.5

Made in small batches. Lot number and tannin purity printed on the back of every box.

In their words

What changed at 45.

Before 45

Skin before 45: fresh oil with vitamin E on the surface, no smell.

After 45

Skin after 45: vitamin E runs low, the surface oil turns and starts to smell.

This has nothing to do with how often you wash. After 45 the oil your skin makes runs low on the vitamin that keeps it fresh, so it turns.

Nearly everyone over 40 makes the compound. It was found in nobody younger.

A nose stops registering a smell it lives with, which is why other people notice first.

Persimmon soap is still soap.

  • Persimmon soap bar in lather with a pH test strip turned purple.

  • Ayré bar in lather with a pH test strip turned yellow-green.

    Ayré

    pH 5.5

Every persimmon bar on the market is soap, and soap is alkaline.

Alkali switches the persimmon tannin off before it touches you, and strips skin over 50 on the way through. That is why your last persimmon soap half-worked.

Ayré is balanced to your skin at 5.5. The persimmon arrives at full strength. Your skin stays soft.

Every ingredient has a job.

  • A ripe orange persimmon with its dried green calyx

    Fermented persimmon

Unripe persimmons fermented for months into a tannin that binds the turned oil so water can carry it off. Strength tested on every lot.

  • A glossy purple eggplant

    Eggplant extract

Catches the part of the smell persimmon leaves behind.

  • Dried licorice root sticks

    Licorice root

Fades the dark spots that collect on the neck and chest.

  • A bowl of green matcha powder

    Matcha green tea

Binds the same compounds a second way and calms the skin.

  • A yellow sunflower head

    Sunflower vitamin E

Puts back the vitamin your skin ran low on, so less oil turns.

  • Green olives with olive leaves

    Olive squalane

The same oil your skin makes, in a form that can’t turn. Keeps skin soft after the wash.

The research behind it.

  • 45

The age from which nonenal, the compound behind aging odor, was found on skin. It appeared in nobody younger.

Haze et al., Shiseido · Journal of Investigative Dermatology, 2001

  • 4.7

The natural pH of skin. Bar soap, persimmon soap included, measures 9 to 10.

Lambers et al., 2006 · Tarun et al., 2014

  • 60 days

Vitamin E put on the skin daily lifted skin-oil levels to a peak at 60 days. Within 6 to 8 days of stopping they were back where they started, which is why the bar is for every shower.

    Passi et al., BioFactors, 2003

  • Alkaline

Tannins lose their activity in alkaline conditions. Soap is alkaline. The persimmon in a soap bar is switched off before it reaches you.

Makkar and Becker · Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 1996

Sixty seconds, six hotspots.

  1. Woman lathering behind her ear and the back of her neck with the Ayré bar

Behind the ears and the back of the neck

Where the oil glands sit closest to the skin.

  2. Woman washing her chest and shoulders with the Ayré bar

    Chest, shoulders and upper back

The largest area, and the one most people skip.

  3. Woman with her arm raised, washing her underarm with the Ayré bar

    Underarms, then rinse

One bar lasts about a month at one shower a day.

What to expect.

  1. First wash

Skin smells like nothing, and no scent replaces it.

  2. Week 1

Use it on all six spots daily. Oil that built up over years takes a few washes to clear from the creases.

  3. Week 2

Other people notice before you do.

  4. Week 4

Dark spots on the neck and chest begin to fade. Skin stays soft after the wash.

  5. Month 3

The oil keeps turning after 45. The bar keeps it from building up, so keep going.

Questions

Why can’t I smell it on myself?

A nose stops registering a smell it lives with. The people close to you noticed first for the same reason, and you will not be the one to notice it is gone. The honest test is a pillowcase or a shirt collar after a day’s wear, or someone who will tell you the truth.

Will it work if I’ve tried persimmon soap before?

Very likely, because the bar you tried was soap. Soap measures pH 9 to 10, and persimmon tannin loses its activity in alkali, so most of it was switched off before it reached your skin. Ayré is balanced to skin at pH 5.5, so the tannin arrives working. If you turn out to be one of the few it does not help, the 90-day guarantee covers you.

Does it have a scent?

No. Nothing is added for scent. Wet, the bar smells faintly of tea and persimmon; on skin it leaves no smell at all, which is the point. It will not fight your perfume, and it will not tell anyone you are using it.

Is it drying?

No. It is not a soap. The cleanser is a mild coconut-derived one at the pH of your skin, with glycerin and olive squalane in the bar, so skin is soft after the rinse rather than tight. If your skin is very dry, once a day is enough.

Can my husband use it?

Yes. Nonenal rises with age in men and women alike, and men make more skin oil. Same bar, same six spots. A good share of our customers buy it for both of them.

How long does one bar last?

About a month at one shower a day with the six-spot routine. Kept on the bamboo holder so it drains, a little longer; left in a puddle, less. The four bars in the bundle are about four months.

Why does it cost more than a supermarket bar?

A supermarket bar is soap: fat and lye, poured in minutes. This is a pH-balanced cleanser built around a persimmon tannin that takes months to ferment and is tested for strength on every lot, with five more actives that each have a job. It comes to 97 cents a day for one bar, and 49 cents a day on the bundle.

What if it doesn’t work for me?

Email us within 90 days of delivery and we refund the whole order. Keep the bars. We will ask one question, what you noticed, because it helps us, and that is all.
